Dear Robert:

We've finally got our computer (the PC) back.

Below is the info I can find on this line immediately. I may well have other connections, but haven't "seen" 'em yet. If you have any other info that you're willing to share, I may be able to find more links for you.

Sincerely,
Randy

Thank you for your prompt reply. However, I am not sure we are talking about the same Edwin Muir (my grandfather). The 1869 ? year of birth I provided is based upon his age (in years) provided in the Ellis Island data for his May 21, 1921 date of entry --- I have no doubt about that being the date of his entry into the United States (a notation was even made at Ellis Island about his amputated leg and my father --- age 7 at the time --- having a scalp condition). On the Ellis Island data this Edwin's place of birth was given as "Lochee" (now part of the City of Dundee) Scotland.

An E-mail contact in TN --- the granddaughter of my father's sister --- has heard that this Edwin's father had the name Thomas (but I have no way to verify that). Also, this Edwin Muir and Elizabeth Sharp Muir had twelve children --- I can research most of them from the Ellis Island data (except the oldest, Andrew who remained in Scotalnd), if that would be of help.

Again, thank you for what you have done.

I do know of an Edwin b. 1 Apr. 1868 in Old Machar (Aberdeenshire) to Edwin & Williamina (SMITH) MUIR, but nothing else on this line. Then, there's Edwin b. 5 Jan. 1872 in Largo (Fifeshire) to James & Isabella (GRIEVE) MUIR. I know of at least 3 other "Edwin MUIRs" b. within a 5 yr. period (inc. 1868 & 1872), but the other 3 weren't b. in Scotland (1 was even b. in NY state). I won't say that I know beyond a doubt that "your" Edwin is the 1 b. to James and Isabella, but ... that would be my 1st guess, based on what we currently know. Can you tell me anything else about these MUIRs? Where did they go to in the US? When and where did they die? These could be some most helpful clues for me to try to be of further serviee. I do save and all MUIR info. So anything you can share would be most helpful in my being able to further help you.

Sincerely,
Randy

Thank you, again, for all you are doing.

Elizabeth Sharp Muir (my grandmother) died in 1921 (New Jersey or New York) about six months after entering the United States on May 21, 1921. Edwin Muir (my grand father) never remarried. He died in 1950 (Greenwood Lake, Orange County, New York).

Edwin had to have his leg amputated following a rail road accident in Scotland when he was age 12. Some say he was "working for the rail road", but my father said it was because he was playing close to the tracks. Andrew Muir, oldest uncle of mine, lost his right arm in WWI, but I have not found any record of his service. My father, Robert (no middle name), died in December of 1997 (Starke, Flordia).
I will see what additional information I can find about the family.

Dear Robert:

I really do believe we're talking about the same Edwin and Elizabeth. I don't know how long you may have been trying to do genealogy (and definitely no insult intended), but ... It is so important to try to document each and every piece of info you have, even if it's just something that's been passed on to you verbally. There are often times when "discrepencies" come up and it's so important to be able to go back to the original source so you can better figure out which may be more accurate. This is your line and if you and I "disagree" on some "particulars," I'd be inclined to believe you're right, as long as you have some kind of "proof."

The way I see the immediate family of Edwin & Elizabeth is below. I would really appreciate any other info you may have on any other children they may have had. Again, these could be of big assistance to trying to find any other links for you.

BTW (By The Way),I do know of one other MUIR who was in Greenwood Lake area ... There was a "Neva I." (I don't know her surname, but I know she was b. 1911 in NY and d. 2003 in FL) who m. some MUIR and they had a child be the name of "Robert MUIR."

Sincerely,
Randy

Dear Robert:

I'm not sure which way to go your MUIRs yet (besides what I've already mentioned), but I strongly suspect your Elizabeth SHARP is the one mentioned in this Mormon FGR (Family Group Record):

Thank you. That is most interesting. Do not have any additional information about her to provide. I understand that she died in 1921 --- about six months after entering the United States.

Andrew & Margaret SHARP (Elizabeth Kay SHARP's parents) were from Largo, which looks like it's only about 1 1/2 miles from Leven. Seems like quite a reasonable distance for the MUIR family and the SHARP family to have become acquainted with each other in some way. Edwin was supposedly b. in Largo, too. Seems like quite a possible link to me.

Have you been able to locate any death record on Elizabeth at all ... or 1911 census info from Scotland?

Randy

What little information I have at this point is that Philip and James Muir listed Mrs. Grahan Currie (aunt), 99 Bergen Ave. Kearney, NJ as his address upon entering the United States. All of the Muirs listed the same address upon their entry. I suspect (but this is only a guess on my part) she may have died in late 1921 or early 1922 in or near Kearney, NJ
