A John Muir was baptised in the parish of Carnwath on 18th June 1777. John was the son of William Muir and Frances Somerville and had three sisters: Margaret, b 1771, Jean b 1774 and Janet b 1779 ( and from another family tree I found that Janet was born in Carnwath in 1779, she married Alexander Thompson in Whitburn, Linlithgow in 1810 and died in Switzerland, Indiana, USA in 1872). I take it that these people were related to your ancestors. Some of the family trees that I have found on the web refer to John Muir’s birth on 18th June 1877 in Whitburn parish, Linlithgow but I found no individual of that name in the Scotland online records for Whitburn. I think that this place of birth may be a mistake. So that makes John Muir of Carnwath as likely to be your ancestor. But who did he marry?
Surprisingly there are entries for two marriages in 1808 between a John Muir and a Mary Prentice ! It seems to be to be extraordinary for two couples with the same names to be married the same year but this does seem to be the case. The first marriage took place between John Muir and Mary Prentice in Edinburgh in the parish of St Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh. Banns for John Muir of St Cuthbert’s Edinburgh and Mary Prentice of Culter were proclaimed in Culter on Feb 1st 1808 and they were married in Edinburgh in March 1808. The names of two children of John Muir and Mary Prentice (of Edinburgh) are recorded in Scotland online: John Muir born 3rd July 1811 and Euphemia Muir born 5th Sept 1813. But I could find no records of any other children born to this John Muir and Mary Prentice.
The second marriage took place in West Lothian (or Linlithgowshire as it was then called) where on 1st November 1808 in Livingston the banns were called between John Muir and Mary Prentice. On 13th November 1808 John Muir and Mary Prentice were married in Whitburn, West Lothian – “John Muir here and Mary Prentice, Livingston” . In view of the fact that John Muir’s sister, Janet Muir, was married in Whitburn to Alexander Thompson this John Muir and Mary Prentice would seem to provide the best fit with your family. However I could find no baptismal records relating to any offspring of this couple. This does not mean that they did not have children but their baptisms were never registered. Maybe they emigrated immediately and all their children were born outside Scotland.
From a different Muir family I have found two children born in Dalserf, Lanarkshire whose baptisms do fit with your dates. A” William Muir born to John Muir in Dalserf village and Mary Harvey, a natural child, born 6th July 1809, baptised 8th October 1809”. (A natural child is an illegitimate child). A year later in Dalserf another child was born to John Muir - this was Alicia born 16th December 1810 to John Muir and Elizabeth Henry and three years later a third child, Frances Muir, who was baptised 31st October 1813 born to John Muir and Elizabeth Henry. However I have not been able to find a marriage record between John Muir and Elizabeth Henry.
I have been unable to find records of the other children you mentioned in your posting (Mary 1808, Jane 1820, Samuel 1822, John Jr 1825 and Margaret 1828). One of the family trees I found on line (Benson) refers to John Muir arriving in Quebec in 1821 and so you might need to search Canadian records for Samuel, John Jr, and Margaret.
For the moment I have come to a halt but if your are sure about the dates of birth of William Muir and his sister Frances Muir then they must almost certainly be the offspring of John Muir of Dalserf but are not children of Mary Prentice. I'll continue my searches but can you let me know your own line back to John Muir - I only have the info from other online sites. Best wishes, Oliver.
